In 1974 the island was partitioned into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus. The latter has been a member of the European Union since 2004. The Mediterranean climate of the island shapes the diverse landscape: Between the two mountain ranges stretches the fertile plain Mesaoria in which the capital Nicosia is situated. The city offers great sites such as the Venetian walls from 1567 or the Archbishop’s Palace. From Nicosia many streets stellar lead over the island so that a holiday home in the capital is a great starting point for visiting other cities and places on Cyprus, for example Kyrenia in the north which is a town close to great nature reserves.

The interesting harbour city Paphos lies around 80 kilometres to the west of Limassol and offers a historic fort, a lighthouse and the renowned royal tombs.
